In 1990, Alexander Stalmatski, came to Australia and introduced the practise of Breathing Retraining to the Western world. Needless to say this had a profound and somewhat controversial impact in Australia. He taught almost 2000 people in Melbourne & Sydney alone in 2 years. It prompted no less than 12 different TV appearances and pieces featuring people’s testimonials about their dramatic and long lasting improvement in asthma, allergies & sleep.

It was only these TV programs that raised the political pressure that caused the first western clinical study on Breathing Retraining using the Buteyko Method in Brisbane which commenced in 1993. The “method” which is applied to train people was formalised by the newly formed Australian based Buteyko Institute of Breathing and Health Inc. (BIBH)

Today the BIBH is the professional body representing the Buteyko Institute Method (BIM) and its Practitioners throughout the world. It was established in 1996 and is a not for profit organisation committed to improving health by correcting asthma, sleep disorders and other breathing related conditions through research, development, promotion and application of Breathing Retraining using the BIM.

The Buteyko Institute Method(BIM) is the content and core training applied in the Breathing Retraining Courses that teaches people how to normalise their automatic breathing and reduce hyperventilation. The Buteyko Institute of Breathing & Health (BIBH) is the regulatory body for the Buteyko Institute Method(BIM) and Practitioners. The BIM is regulated by standards, codes and guidelines and practitioners undergo ongoing training, assessment and professional development.
